WRENCHES!!!!

Post by DianneB »

I have a very broad collection of spanners under 1/2", both imperial and metric - probably 40 different wrenches in all kinds of oddball sizes - but whenever I am working on my locomotive (1960s vintage) I never seem to have the right size for this nut or that union or whatever-other-thing I am trying to tighten or loosen! :x In pipe unions, I have about 3 different hex sizes all for 1/4" tube and not a single wrench that fit the body of the union!

Where can I get a set of spanners from 0 to 3/8" in 128th intervals????

I don't know where you'd get Open Ended wrenches like that- but a FAFA (adjustable...) works OK usually. It's not uncommon to find brass fittings from the UK in BA sizes, but for 1/4" tube I'd be expecting to find 3/8 hex or 7/16th... (mostly 7/16th, myself, because that's what Swage uses on B400 fittings...) Anyway, enjoy the "fun" of the hobby ( ? ) :)

If you have extra wrenches why don't you modify( open up) some of the ones that are a bit to small to fit what you need?

Check out Keith Appleton on You Tube.....he has been using some wrenches made by Blackgates Engineering in the UK. I think they are laser cut stainless steel, and they are deigned specifically to work on model engineer size nuts and fittings. I seem to remember they are made both Metric and Imperial.

I have a similar wrench that was sold for installing and removing studs in horse shoes. The name of a long-defunct horse shoe manufacturer is cast into the handle.

Isn't there one out there that says "Vise Grips" on the handle?

It's 4 in, though, so not as tiny as those being discussed above.

I have made a lot of wrenches, some to fit odd sized nuts/fittings and others with strangely shaped handles or heads for "hard to get at" fittings. I am beginning to think it would be worth making a grinding fixture so I can cut any size jaw square and parallel easily!

You can get what are called ignition wrenches / spanners from various companies - Proto , Snap on and Im sure many other suppliers .

The sizing is by 32 and 64 ths from memory , they have one end straight and the other end is 45 degrees pretty handy .

This is just one of many sets you can get from Proto , various sizes etc .

Seeing you live in Canada look at Canadian Tire or Princess auto for cheaper versions .
