Prairie 2-6-2 in Tulsa

Post by dnevil »

I made a trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma back in March and had the opportunity to take several photos of the Prairie class 2-6-2 locomotive on exhibit at Expo Square. Here is a link to the photos.

I'd love to see a live steam model of this locomotive!

That’s interesting. I’ve never seen this locomotive.

Is it Frisco, or does anyone know the lineage?

I see it has an Allen stack....

Lol

Looks like a wrought iron fence company made a new pilot for it.

Sadly, the 940 suffered a similar fate and locals had a pilot made. It doesn’t look bad, but it’s definitely not one of the three Santa Fe pilots used.

The crew is working on building a correct “local” pilot for the 940. This is the road switcher type pilot a lot of freight engines ended up with that had a narrowed tube pilot and a full width footboard.

On the corner of Tulsa’s fairgrounds sits an old Baldwin steam locomotive. The Dierks Forest #207. It was built in 1917 and was used by a lumber company, Dierks Forest, for hauling lumber in southeast Oklahoma and southwest Arkansas and was moved to Tulsa’s fairgrounds in 1963.

perfect sized loco for a group to restore, and like you mentioned nice lines for a live steam locomotive.

Does anyone have the drawings to build the engine? I heard someone said that there was someone in Wisconsin that might have a set

Some more interested shots of that nice engine can be found here.

Nice looking Prairie.
I appears to have balanced slide valves. A good feature most likely standard from Baldwin, by 1912.
