My guess would be that the detergent doesn't freeze and provides a lubricant to allow slip movement between the ice and the tube as the bend is made.

Thanks. Interesting subject.
I once was successful in a bid for making several fuel lines from ½" aluminum tubing (defense contract).

A fixture was built that allowed the bends to be created without filling the tubing. I also built several formed tubes for the Bell helicopter helmet gunsight, which required two bends (offsets) that didn't distort the tubing, so this subject has been of interest to me.

Table salt is more finely grained than most sand.... Try sealing one end of the tube then fill it FULL of table salt instead of sand. Pack the salt tightly and then seal the other end of the tube. You'll want as little internal void (like none) in the tube as possible once it's sealed.

Nope. Regardless of what they use as a filler in the tubing of the instrument.... Cerrobend, pitch, or ice, they do the bend in one move.... Even complex compound curves.

I think that the soap will cause the solution to gell rather than crystallizing as pure water would.
