Running a live steamer "1930s style"
Re: Running a live steamer "1930s style"
A great time running and eating at John's on Saturday.
I concentrated on the eating portion of the activities!
Here are a few pictures taken on Saturday.

Nice. I like the simple angle-steel rails.
Good idea.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that is “the” Wee Angus.
A recent hospital visit prevented me taking a locomotive....this time. I will be back however.

It was a great turnout for the end of the season meet! I think John has the official count but I believe there were 12 of us in total. Just goes to show that there is plenty of interest in the "old school" 3 1/2" gauge high line tracks!

I just discovered some Little Engines correspondence from 1939 & 1940 that some of you might enjoy.

Actually some riding cars did have brakes. Our 2.5" Ga. car had a steel-clad wood plank about 9" long under the center of the car. The pad was normally retracted by a coil spring on each corner. Actuating the brake lever caused an eccentric cam in the center of the pad to force the brake pad against the rails. There was plenty of friction, and the train stopped "immediately, if not sooner."

Forgive me for possibly hijacking this link as "Running a live steamer 1950s style" and my apologies. I had previously announced another old film here and wished to announce two more:

Re: Running a live steamer "1930s style"
Thanks to the kindness of Toronto Society of Model Engineers who have loaned us their portable sectional 3 1/2inch and 4 3/4 inch gauge track we now have over 100 feet of track set up in our garden in North York. The track takes the shape of a letter "C". We are located centrally at the north end of Toronto. If any live steamers want to visit to test run their locos they will be made welcome Pease contact us via this site. Regards David and Judy Powell
