Hi all,
We had some hot weather last week that was too hot to do anything outside, so I spent my spare time inside working on another pattern.
This is the poling pocket for a 2.5" scale Class A Climax. I'm building my trucks to 7.5" gauge, but Climax built Class A locos from track gauges of 24" to 96 inches, and many different gauges in between. So in 2.5" gauge, I could build a scale model between 5" and 20" gauges. Standard gauge scales out to 11.77", so I could build a second set of trucks to run on 12" gauge tracks and not be very far off from scale, for the truck widths.
As far as I can tell, this casting is specific to the Class A, unlike the other castings I have been making for the trucks that fit trucks for both the Class A and small Class B locos. The casting is about 2.3" x 2.9", and reminds me that I am still not used to the size of modeling in 2.5" scale, things turn out bigger than I expect. The large hole is for the truss rods to support the wood frame. The small holes are to bolt it to the wood endsill. Climax used one pattern for all 4 corners. I have included an image of the prototype casting.
This was a fun project. Now I just need the rest of the frame that goes between these castings!
Regards,
Doug

Doug, do you plan on making any more castings? Your pole pockets look really good. I’ve been kind of scouting around for 2.5” or 3” scale pockets for my 12” ga cars. If you are interested in selling any please let me know.
Thanks
Glenn

Glenn,
How many are you looking for? I have not ordered any yet, and don't have a price from the foundry. I am having these investment cast in steel, btw.
John,
Thanks for the kudos!

Doug

Doug, 18 or so. Maybe even 26, if my budget allows. I would keep some extras for future cAr builds, Cattails Foundry would be a good choice, back in Lancaster County, PA. It’s run by an Amish family and they do superb work. They sometimes take a long time to deliver, e.g. months, but their price structure is very, very competitive. And you can trust them implicitly through out the process. Also sometimes they use rather coarse sand, so their castings can be a bit grainy. But overall the wheels I had them make were perfect - not one flaw in the whole batch.
Thanks

Glenn,
I have not heard back from the foundry yet on these castings. I have not forgotten you! They are investment castings, btw, and not sand cast.

Hi Doug
Nice pattern.
I'm assuming it is metal.
Does your foundry make a rubber mold?
Not criticizing but could you have dimpled the spots where you will drill?

Dave,
The pattern is actually injected wax that is of a purple colour.
I could have added dimples to start the drill in, but considering that I only need 4 of these with a total of 12 holes, I didn't bother. I have added dimples on parts before where location was not critical.

Doug
