Going over the issue of which types of material, I want to hear about a general guide on metal wear. My background says that when two surfaces contact, you want one of them to be the 'sacrificial' metal. Usually of the two parts, one is going to be easier to replace that the other. In David's case, I would say the cylinder casting it the one to protect. The valve would be the easy part to access and replace as needed.

Given his cylinders (I think he said bronze), which material would be best for the valves?

A reminder that Machinery's Handbook should have a chart showing compatibility of various materials for bearing use.

Something in your last post caught my attention, you said “superheater”, our scale super heaters normally don’t get hot enough, but it is possible that your steam oil is not holding to the the dry steam, you my check the specs on Lycurgus steam oil. Just a thought.

Okay, I give up. I have searched for Lycurgus steam oil to no avail. Perhaps a link or something?

Try Green Velvet from PA. See you at the fall open house.

David,
Sorry to send you down the Rabit hole but that was “Lycurgus” must have been an auto type, or auto correct, mistake. I didn’t see it until now. Just check whatever you are using and it should specify for wet or dry steam, not sure but I think green velvet is only for wet steam.

The oil I have been using is from PM Research. There is no specification for this oil, it is simply called, "Cylinder Oil"

As for Green Velvet oil, it is no longer available online and is no longer being produced by the company in Washington. It is only available from a company in Colorado. Looks like minimum quantity is a 5 gallon pail.
