Packing material
Packing material
Need to repack valve stem throttle nut. Can I use Teflon paste?, or do I need granite thread? Sources?

Re: Packing material
I don’t think paste would work, it’d just ooze out and into the steam chest. McMaster-Carr has graphite packing yarn, but it’s fairly large at 1/8” square. But it can be pulled apart into individual strands pretty easy too.

Re: Packing material
I believe some hardware stores carry the multi-strand packing material too.
Re: Packing material
Forgot to mention the throttle is in the cab. That is why I think the paste might work

Re: Packing material
It is highly unlikely you'd enjoy long term success with paste, as even solid Teflon will slowly extrude. Paste? Likely to escape quickly.

I use graphite tape from McMaster-Carr. A 50 ft roll of the 1/4" wide, .015" thick plain back tape is $11.71. The part number is 9481K11.

Re: Packing material
I used the graphite tape from McMaster Carr. It works fine. It dose not last as long as the graphite yarn packing. Fine for 1 1/2" scale packings. But the strands of yarn are easier to install in 3/4" scale..
