Looking for info on this 3-1/2" gauge B&M 4-4-2 Atlantic
Hello everyone,
I came across this picture on the North East Live Steamers history page and I was hoping that maybe Mr. Symmes or someone else who might have info on the engine frequents this board. I am interested in the history of this locomotive, specifically what plans and castings was it built from? Im guessing the plans are no longer available today?

I know the current owner of this loco. It has run at my track a few times. What exactly do you wish to know?

Thank you for the info, it looks like the "Friends Atlantic" is not currently being offered (at least on the website), hopefully John has the plans for this particular model. I really like the look of the large drivers.

Hello FKreider & group.
Drawings are available. Castings will be produced as soon as the 3/4" K4, Friends' current "bring it back" project, is back online fully. The cored piston valve cylinders are (2018) back on the market for the first time in more than 50 years. Drive wheels are in process....same thing....they haven't been cast since the 1960s. Once the K4 is finished I can do the B & M Atlantic and the B & A tanker.
Incidentally, the loco in question was one of the first three steamers I ever saw. There were 3 locos operating on 3 portable tracks outside a Lionel/HO show in 1983, and this was one of them. It's a Friends/Yankee B & M Atlantic but with Walshaert gear custom-built and fitted by the builder. This is what the real B & M engine had. Lester Friend put Baker gear on the initial design, because he liked the Baker, and because he thought beginners would have an easier time with drilling bushing holes in the Baker, than they would trying to cut a link slot and a die block.

Hi John,
Thanks for the info and history, it is neat to hear the history of why Lester Friend designed it one way vs. another way.
Does the Atlantic share the same cylinder patterns as one of your other locomotives? or is it a completely separate design?

Re: Looking for info on this 3-1/2" gauge B&M 4-4-2 Atlantic
Actually, the “Friend’s” Atlantic was NOT designed by Mr. Friend. It was the work of Alan Armitage who was also very famous for his work with narrrow gauge and O scale model railroads.

There was a 3/4 inch scale Atlantic for sale on ebay.

Is this also a Friends/Armitage design?

You are correct Keith. In my stash ,I have a few copies of the Armitage drawings before Lester put the Friends name over Armitage,Langworthy and the designer of the Dinky.
Re: Looking for info on this 3-1/2" gauge B&M 4-4-2 Atlantic
The designer of the Dinky was Karl Frederick. You will notice on the drawings the name “Upsy” on the side tank. It’s sister locomotive was “Daisy!”
