Loco identification?

Hi all,

A friend of mine sent me an image of a 1/2" scale Hudson he picked up, of which I have attached an image. I think the loco is built from the LE Miller design. Can any one confirm that? I have never run across an engine of the Miller design before.

Hi Doug,

Yes, I would say that it is the Miller design. I've just compared it with the drawings that we have and it looks pretty much identical.

Just found this copy of the advert from ModelMaker. Not the best quality though unfortunately.

That's a nice looking locomotive. The cylinders look different than Little Engines 1/2" scale cylinders, which is probably the most commonly found 1/2" scale stuff here in the us, at least as far as parts/pieces go. I notice it looks like it has displacement oilers under the running boards on each side. My Coventry pacific has that type of oiling system. It must have been pretty common for small scales back in 30's through the 50's. Great find.

Another 1/2" Hudson (Pacific?), this with PMLW cast into the cylinders. Integral frame. I have patterns (wood masters, aluminum working). Any info on these?

Hi Doug,

Unfortunately I don't know the date of the advert. I think it was sent to us as a scan from one of our USA members along with some articles.
Miller did write a series of articles for Model Maker featuring the 4-6-4. These began in the issue for July/August 1935 so the advert will probably be from around that time. The Miller articles carried on into the 1940's.

We do have copies of some of the articles but not all. I think we have copies of all the drawings though.
