K-4 Detailed Boilder Jacket
K-4 Detailed Boilder Jacket
I have just finished the detailed boiler jacket for PRR K-4. Based on my copy of the original print the prototype jacket was made up of .065 sheets of steel fastened to the boiler with machine screws. I fabricated the 27 sheets from 24 gage steel and attached them to my 13 gage sub jacket using approximately four hundred 1-72 screws. That process involved a lot of hand tapping but in the end I feel I have strengthened my wrists in the process. Here are a few photos of the jacket. The next step is to remove the detailed jacket, paint the back sides and reinstall. Then on to the grates and ashpan.
