1915 1/8” scale ten wheeler

Post by Glenn Brooks »

Visited the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City today.

Excellent display of restored, working locomotives and rolling stock from the Truckee and Virginia RR, including the oldest, fully operational steam locomotive in America. BTW, the curator says the Loco still steams on its original boiler.

Also they have on display a supberb model of one of the earliest 1/8” working scale models of a 4-6-0 ten wheeler (not a mogul as I first mentioned) ever made. This one was built between 1912 and 1915 by students of the University of Nevada School of Engineering, for the 1915 San Francisco Pan Pacific exposition. Looks like 7.5” gauge, or something very close to it. The Loco appears in excellent mechanical condition and very credibly built.

Pleasant surprise to see it on display.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a ten-wheeler, not a mogul. Is the hump in the boiler under the bell real, or just a result of the focal length of the lens on the camera?

Oops, it is a 10 wheeler! I’ll try to change the title to reflect this. There is a lot of distortion in my crummy iPhone camera. Also from the plastic box surrounding.

However, the boiler does appear to be similar to a wagon top style boiler. Definitely slanted upwards to the firebox area- similar to how some of the turn of the century Pacifics were made. Wish I had taken a few more pics. It was difficult to get good photos because of the protective plastic/glass box surrounding the Loco.

It would not surprise me if it was 7-1/16" gauge.

This loco model may have used the V&Ts own No.26 & 27 as a prototype. It is Virginia & Truckee RR. I think this may be a new exhibit in the museum. My son and I will be attending the V&TRRHS conference next weekend so I will get a close look at the model.

Cary, yes, I think you may be correct. The professor who organized the build, was closely affiliated with the VTRR. Be very interesting to hear what you find out.

It's been there a while Cary (2 or 3 years at least). When are you and Scotty getting up there? We'll be there Wednesday...
