Who offers window frame castings?

Post by Benjamin Maggi »

I am working on a DL&W caboose (similar to the 1" scale kit offered by Nelson Grey) and will need a lot of identical window frames. I see some listed on the Cannonball website but the three sizes they offer aren't really close to what I need. I need something around 3" (wide) by 4.75" (tall), double-hung style. Mountain Car Company used to offer window castings too, and their largest might have worked. I reached out to Titan Trains today to see if they still have them.

Is anyone else aware of any caboose window castings available?

Thanks.

Look up places that sell parts and pieces for doll houses. The smallest ones are 1" scale. I used stuff from the local dealer to build a 1" combine. Lots of good stuff for our hobby.

Thanks for the tip regarding doll houses. Finding 1" stuff online isn't too difficult. It is finding stuff larger, for 1.5" scale, where things get trickier. I will look though.

J&S Railcar can make them any size you need.

And if you can draw them up, or get someone to do it for you, you can have them printed by Shapeways.

I have eight @ 3-1/8" x 5" die cast frames with no proposed use.

I also have a box full of wooden doll house windows for projects that I may never finish. They simulate double hung for 2-9/16" x 5-1/16" and 2" x 4" opening. I believe these are standard sizes for doll house windows.

Titan Trains confirmed they don't offer caboose window castings anymore.

A push comes to shove solution! Use Evergreen styrene strips (hobby shops and online) and make a master pattern. Use Alumilite Casting materials (www.alumilite.com) and make a mold. These are flexible, so you do not any draft on the shallow patterns. The casting material is a resin plastic. Make a second mold that is just a flat block the size of the master mold. After a pour, put the flat block on the master to flatten the resin. This squeezes the excess into a thin flash and saves trying to sand the backside flat.

Thanks David. I talked with someone who did just that for a 1" scale project, and it worked fine but it cost a lot in material for a small project. It may or may not make sense here, but it is certainly an option I will keep in mind.
