A catalog for Harpur Locomotive Works was recently auctioned on eBay. Several pages of the catalog were posted, and this one caught my eye. It shows a split smokebox containing superheater and feedwater heater coils.
More pages of the catalog can be see here.

I have drawings for the super heater. Pretty slick.

slick but not very useful as a feedwater heater considering that it is not actually in the flow of hot air..
yes it will add temperature to the incoming water but...is it worth the nuisance?

Too many things going on to bother listing them.

No nuisance at all, mine has been trouble free for years.

Re: Harpur/Allen Mogul Smokebox Configuration
I have talk to a lot of owners and most say it works. I think it may change the temp a bit. but not a lot. I know one thing. On the consolidation my friend owns, witch was Gene's engine. He has change out the ball in the water pump twice in three or four year. He is using the nylon one and I told him to change to the SS one. It deforms from the heat that the tubing backs up to it. Yes its plump to the front sheet of the boiler. Yes a coil in there too. Steve Alley

soft balls are generally not a good idea unless you have a broad, flat seat at a 45 degree angle....even then they are short lived.
