I have used the fire starter chunks that are wax/sawdust to light of my coal fire. Works great. Someone suggested that it would dirty up my flues but I don't see any of that.

No experience with a Live Steam loco, but I would think that a hot, coal fire would burn off any remnants from the wax(paraffin)/wood starter.
