Steam cylinder oil
Steam cylinder oil
Has anyone had any experience with the Mobil 600w steam cylinder oil...
Re: Steam cylinder oil
Yes, it is steam cylinder oil. Works like it suppose to. Comes in 5 gal. buckets and will last you two life times.

Lots and lots, including re-selling as a bottled product. I began using it years ago because it was stocked locally for a very reasonable price. I've found no reason to use anything else although there are other steam oils on the market.

Mobil Super 600 is a good cylinder oil. I use Chevron Cylinder W 460 because my neighbor is a chevron dealer and it’s comparable to Mobil 600

Re: Steam cylinder oil
Does anybody know a source for the Type 3 Steam Oil (non-emulsifing) for hydrostatic lubricators ? The Mobile 600 oil emulsifys with the steam and is used in mechanical lubricators and is Type 1 Steam Oil. Real Trains used to sell both types and I am almost out of the non-emulsifying Type 3 Steam Oil. Thanks, optigman
Re: Steam cylinder oil
be sure to stir the oil because it settles to the bottom of the bucket.

Re: Steam cylinder oil
I have a 5 gallon bucket of the Mobile 600. Never had any success getting any kind of composition information, specifically tallow content. I am sure the oil is heavy enough but would like to know if it really has all the other stuff that is needed for live steam service.
Just because it is steam rated oil doesn't mean it is meant for reciprocating engines ( could be used on turbines that use a nitrogen charge to reduce the corrosion or something similar.
Does any one have any mfg specs on this stuff?

Re: Steam cylinder oil
I've been using it for decades, never had any issues in any of my locomotives.

Re: Steam cylinder oil
Theres no real tallow in it anymore, its all synthetic fats now.

If the synth fats emulsify the same, that's what matters.
