Is anyone here running the Shattock Alcohol Burner? I would like to build and install one in my 3/4" scale Hudson I am building. I have the plans and articles. I would like to see some good pictures if anyone has any. I like the idea since my locomotives are housed in my basement and will be run in and out of there once in operation. Thanks!

Hello H&NERY,

Please think of using this type of burner with an adjustable nozzle. It*s sucking and atomizing liquid fuel like diesel, petroleum and any sort of alcohol, too.
Maybe the burner introduced by Eccentric E. could be used, too!

I have a 3/4' Hudson that runs very nicely on propane, which I find easier to deal with than alcohol.

There is an article on it in a 1988 version of live steam magazine.

I am sure that I can 'dig up some drawings' and scan them if needed...

It depends on how you design the burner Bill. I know of some that worked very nicely.

I can’t wait to try out your style of Burner... I’ve got all the chunks of metal now and will most likely fab it up very soon. I wish there was a video of the flame coming off it so I can understand how it burns but that’s just me over thinking things. I found some 1/4” SS plate to make my arch from while rooting around in the scrap bin.

Do you think it might even do one better by adding a tiny shelf at the outlet of the fuel? I was trying to think of anything that might aid in spreading the fuel out such that it has an easier time mixing with the turbulent air.

Here’s the burner that is similar to Steve Bratina’s. This is from some old GGLS archives that I have in my stash.

Here’s the basic layout I mentioned above. I’ll leave it up to Steve to chime in with detail if needed... I’ll add my “idea” about the burner in a second.

This is me overthinking the deal but it’s something I’d like to try... I really can’t wait to finish this new locomotive and try out this burner. My Coventry Pacific is propane fired and it’s almost too easy. I need a challenge but I don’t want to turn to the black rocks.

Hopefully I’m on the right track here... I came home around 2:00 and got busy. I need to attach the upper section to the pan still and drill a bunch of holes. Plus I need to fabricate the burner block but I’d like to sleep on the idea for a night regarding the little tray in front on the hole or not.

Steve, I’d love to know if I’m barking up the right tree.

Here’s the intake holes. These come out to roughly 75% of the flue area so I’m not sure if that’s too much or too little? Comments on that would be much appreciated. I need to make the burner block and wrap up the mount holes next but I’m done for the night....
