Coffin Feedwater Heater

Post by JBodenmann »

Hello My Friends
Trying to find some info on the Coffin steam turbine water pump. It looks like on the New York central J1e that's what they used. I'm trying to find drawings and photos. The loco cyclopedias I have don't have much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jack,
Perhaps some more information excerpt from cyclopedias 1941 and 1947 may help a bit?
A more informative scetch is to bee seen of the Elesco turbine may be seen in the 1941 issue, page 402. I will look for some more.
Best regards

Jack you could try the group that is restoring Boston & Maine 3713. They just did a lot of work on its Coffin Pump and I think they have the info.

Is it a CG type pump?

I know that is what was on Red Devil (the SAR 26), so it might be one

I don't have access from here, but might at work if it is, to pdf's of the manuals. It depends on what got digitalized...and if they purged the manuals post PRO scrapping. The books were in the 200 series in the library onboard...

Hello My Friends
Thank you for the information, what you have given me will help. This is for my 3/4" scale New York Central J1e that I am starting to work on. Most of the detail parts I will be making will be made as masters so molds can be made. Then investment castings will be availablele.

There were quite a few with Elescos.

I don't know the ratio, but my collections of photos appears to be about 50-50

Hello My Friends
Some had Elesco, some had Worthington, and some had Coffin systems.

Hello My Friends
Here are some photo's that the New England Steam group sent me. They are working on Maine Central #870, which has a Coffin feed water system. #870 is a very cool pacific that sat in a park in Maine rusting way for many years. They have moved the old girl out of the park and have started restoration. They certainly have their work cut out for them. I saw the engine many years ago and thought what a shame it was to see her in such bad shape. It's good to know she is in good hands now.
