Steam oil

Post by rspringer »

I have mechanical and displacement lubricators on my equipment. Do I use the same steam oil in both or different? I was planning on ordering a 5 gallon pail of either green velvet , Mobil 600 super or shell product. A couple of us were discussing the differences and the question came up about the shelf life of Green Velvet having 9% tallow. The prices are close enough not to matter.

Green Velvet has a very long shelf life.
I am still using the original gallon purchased 15 years ago.
And I visited with Bill Pettigene last weekend, the originator of that lube business, and he agrees it lasts.

What’s the benefit of steam oil with tallow vs. without?

get some tallow based oil, heat it up in a pan on your stove and let it sit for a few days...

Bill, It sounds like you’re describing a benefit of “without tallow”. What’s the benefit of “with tallow”?

Dan,
Please let us know the results of your stove oil test. Also let us know if you will be allowed to use the stove again... lol
Thank you,

I can describe the results from baking foundry sand cores in the oven that used molasses and linseed oil as a binder! Best done with the windows open and while the household authorities are out shopping!

The tallow allows the oil to emulsify with the water.
This lets the oil coat all surfaces where the steam goes.

I assume the mention of the tallow-on-the-stove has to do with making it go rancid.
Stinky, for sure.
The tallow in my steam cylinder oil gets little oxygen in storage, so has not gone rancid.

So can an oil that is described as “emulsifying” be assumed to contain tallow? The Chevron ISO 460 product is described this way, but it doesn’t say what’s in it.

I have a pail of the Chevron W 460. It is emulsifying, but it does not contain real tallow. It uses a synthetic fat that won’t spoil.

depends on how you feel about the smell of rancid fat.....if you like it, then it is a benefit...
