So What scale for 42" Gauge???

Post by johnpenn74 »

Fellow Livesteamers,
I recently returned from the far east having visited Taiwan, Hong Kong and Tokyo this time. I saw a lot 42" gauge prototypes there (mostly built in Japan by Mitsubishi or similar) and can think of a few models to build someday. My question is this, what are some good scales for 42" gauge track? Works out just fine for 5" gauge in 1" scale.

Options?
1/6 scale 2" to the foot and fudge the width of the engine?
2.5" and really fudge the width of the engine? - parts n such available pumps head lights etc...
2.25" inch to the foot scale?

What scale do many of you use in Australia and South Africa use when building a model to run on 7.x gauge track?

Here's some pics from the trip. Highly recommend a visit to Taiwan.

Yes, the last one is a full size steam locomotive simulator; turn every valve. The whole thing shakes and moves....... Only in Japan.

In Australia 3'6" gauge (42") is scaled to 2" and sometimes 2 1/2 , but generally 2"scale .
