Looking a little deeper, the URL below to IBLS reveals a little more about LBSC, his brief visit to the U.S., and additional comments on this forum by John K.in 2007.

BTW, to move this back to the original topic, the brothers have located copies of the relevant Model Engineer issues in the UK. I will post more when they are received.

Also to add to the mystery, this is from a 1938 Ladies Home Journal:
The engines — Mr. Astor keeps a stable of them — were designed by Herbert Pinkham, superintendent at Ferncliff. Whenever Mr. Astor wants to decide some particularly difficult question, he takes a ride on the little railroad.

I've been doing some research online into the Astor Estate locomotives and I came across this forum.
I know its an old topic, but maybe one of you is still interested and will see this??

I actually have the 4-8-4 locomotive that came from the Astor Estate pictured above. It's a 3 1/2". Sandiapaul asked where it was, so I thought I'd comment back.
I'm trying to upload a photo, but it keeps saying it's invalid. I'll keep trying if there's anyone interested in seeing it.

I for one be very interested in the locomotive photo, as it would answer some questions that are just could be this and it could be that. It would be great to see Calvert Holt`s 3/4" engine as he has been gone since 1938. It being a Northern type it is a big locomotive even in 3/4" 3 1/2" gauge.

The board limits the size of images, both in pixels and file size. You may have to reduce the size before it will be accepted by the software.
