Anyone built a Allen mogul/4-6-0/2-8-0 with a raised smokebox and a wide firebox?

Any harm in omitting the water legs and using thin fire brick on each side of the fire box instead?
Look up 'Briggs Boiler'. They are quite common in Australia.
