Full sized injector from scratch

Post by AnthonyDuarte »

Hi everyone,

You may have noticed things have seemed slow from Eccentric Engineer lately, but I promise I haven't been lazy!
I had the pleasure of machining a full set of rods and valve gear for an articulated locomotive, made molds for the 1" scale simplex, have been shooting waxes for the 1.6" compressors when I can, and of course have finished the 1" safety valves (get them while they're available!)

But my main focus has been making a pair of #4 simplex injectors. The smallest that Nathan ever made was a #5, so this had to be designed completely from scratch to meet the customer's specifications. The injector will have a delivery rate of 610 gallons per hour at 150psi, and will be fitted with 3/4" NPT connections.

The body pattern is on a match plate. The two halves were made from a chunks of 2x10x12 aluminum, which ended up with a 3/16" flange that sets into the larger plate. The two halves bolt into each other with the larger plate holding everything in alignment. The alignment bosses are similarly made from two separate pieces that bolt into each other, sitting in counterbores in the plate.
The core boxes are made for shell molding, which should hopefully produce the best possible results and finishes.

All the other bits and pieces for the injector are just about done. Still a few more things to do but nothing major.

Anthony...only one word to describe your work...(expletive deleted) INCREDIBLE! It's one thing to know how to do machine work...it's another to design a smaller version of the real thing. In this case, an injector and get the geometry worked out to produce the desired criteria.

I tip my hat to you! Keep up the great work...and keep us posted. I'm sure others marvel at your ability, knowledge and products! Carl B.

No, I believe they found another to go on that engine. That was a 3.2 Sellers injector.
Not sure if I can say who these are for, but they will need more in the future.

Hello Anthony,
Whow, your both precise and ingenious work is far beyond we 'normal' modelers are able to construct and build 8) !
Regret that I'm building my A using the 'wrong' scale. Otherwise I would order and use your fine scale parts of the Westinghouse CC air pump rather then build them myself! But I will reconsider regarding your safety valves ...
All the best

Thank you all for the kind words.

I’ve been working on some of the last small items while waiting for the bodies. I should have castings next Monday.

The spindle guides were quite fun to make, and it was even more fun to see the steam valve and handle assembly come together.

I hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend!

Castings came out great, thanks in part to Richard Ronnie who graciously shared his many years of pattern making experience. Would not have gone as smoothly without his advice!

It’s such a unique feeling to see these parts in the flesh after staring at them for so many hours on a computer screen!

Fantastic work!

I just picked up some castings from the foundry so I know exactly what you are talking about! (my castings will be on the market in the next week or so.)

Hello My Friends
Absolutely amazing! Those parts belong on a red velvet pillow in a glass case!
