automatic cylinder cocks

Post by Emfinger »

I connected tubes to each of the cylinder cocks and put them in jars of water. My thinking was they would all act the same...not so.
Please watch the youtube and let me know what you think.

The video is marked private. I cannot view it. Is this the same for others?

I can see the video now. Most auto drains I've seen usually weep a little even when closed. Even mechanical ones can too. I prefer mechanical ones, as I get to decide when they are open or closed.

The least amount of junk that comes out of the cylinder can get stuck in the cylinder cocks and prevent them from sealing properly. Did you make your own Cylinder Cocks? If you made your own is there a round seat (hole)? Was the hole drill or was it drilled and reamed? Believe it or not it does make a difference in seats. A drilled hole is not necessarily truly round where a reamed hole or bored hole is true and gives a better seating surface.

Even a reamed hole has a potential to not be round, although the degree of error is reduced considerably from a hole that is just drilled. Boring should (and usually does) provide a truly round hole. I make mention because reamers are notorious for yielding holes with multiple sides. You can see evidence of that if you hone a reamed hole.

If one hopes for a truly round seat, it's hard to beat the practice of lightly tapping a steel ball of the appropriate size while it is in the seat. The slight deformation of the seat will ensure the ball seats firmly.
