Al, remember that if you put a long rod on those oscillators by putting the cylinder up front and connecting to the center driver, you may not have enough "wobble" to make the engine work properly. [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/frown.gif"%20alt="[/img] All of the original oscillator locomotives I have seen (in pictures) connect the cylinders to the front driver for maximum wobble. I know of two members of the Kitsap Live Steamers that built WATO Lil Limas. One used the original Hackworth gear, the other went for Walsharts. The owner of the Hackworth geared engines said that loading made a definete difference in the valve timing.

i wonder what this would do to the Hackworth2 or Marshal gear. it uses swinging links rather that the sliding block but it is still mounted directly above the driver. i'm looking at using Marshal gear on my new engine.

It will have the same effect as Hackworth
This will be another area I would limit the travel of this axle

Thanks for all the good advice, but one question remains un-answered: Just how much in fractions of inches do our little engines' wheels bounce up and down while in operation?
