Ross, When one opts for speed in construction as I sometimes do, then one has not the time for all the little niceties that make a project look great. In the case of the Newbie Project, it is intended to be as bare and simple as possible for someone with little or no steam experience to build. The fact that there is no prototype leaves me with an awful lot of leeway in construction methods used. For example, I am using as much "off the shelf at the local hardware store" stuff as I can get. Were I building a copy of a historic prototype such as my American 4-4-0, I would not even think of using materials that were not to scale. In the case of Newbie, I am using a common 1/4" ball valve for a throttle, Allen cap screws for fasteners, and standard copper tubing and fittings for all piping. I may, just may, mind you, put wood jacketing on the boiler for appearance sake.
