"Newbie" boiler
I started on the boiler for the "Newbie" locomotive today since it was warm out in the back shop. Got the outer shell torched to length and machined off on each end. Could have dressed the ends without a lathe, but since I have the Delta anyway, I used it with a Carbide toolbit. See attachment.

Re: "Newbie" boiler
Brian, I have been described as being completely full of perfectly useless mis-information, in fact I am the Southeastern distributer of such info. Glad to help out when I can be of assistance though. I may work on the firebox for the boiler tomorrow if it is still nice and warm. BTW: That boiler shell in the attachment is 14 inches tall and 10 inches ID. The firebox liner will be made from 8"ID pipe x 5" tall.

Jesse:
It looks just like the smokebox I cut for my Mikado, yesterday. I tried to
cut it using an abrasive wheel in the table saw, but couldn't hold 'er
straight enough, so I ended up cutting it off by hand with the hacksaw.
It took 1 hour and 3 blades.

Bill, Hacksaw! Did you say HACKSAW? Gadzooks! Shocked, I say shocked I am. Obviously you are a glutton for punishment! I cut my shell with a torch because I had one and I am lazy. I could have dressed up the ends with a 4" angle grinder and framing square, but it was easier to stick it in the Rockwell lathe and use a carbide tool. Your use of a hacksaw shows what I and a few others have been preaching for some time. IE: If you want to build a project, don't let a lack of tooling keep you from it. Do it the best way you can. It will take longer, but you will be prouder of your project than the guy with a shop full of the latest tooling. Anyone can take fine machinery and turn out good work, but so can a determined soul with a hacksaw and cold chisel.

Re: "Newbie" boiler
Al, The "Newbie" boiler is simple to build and a good steamer, but I am making only the one. I will supply you with the drawings once I get them finished, or you can wait and see if Live Steam Magazine publishes the series complete with construction text and pictures. I will be at Mid-South first of May and could bring a set of prints to you there. Hopefully, you will be able to see the completed "Newbie" running also. Re: "Newbie" boiler
Al, Not necessary to have code boiler at Mid-South, but boiler has to look correct and withstand 50% overload on hydro test. Boilers have to be tested every year, but this is on the honor system. There is a club poof sheet that when filled out with material thicknesses, stay bolt sizes and centers etc, will tell what the boiler should stand.

Hummmmm! I think I'll still go the mono-tube route---if I can figure out some automatic non electric controls.
