Roof Collapse at historic B&O Mt Clare Roundhouse

Post by Allen_from_CHT »

Right on the heels of Thursday night's break in comes news that the record snowfall in Baltimore brought down fully HALF the roof of this historic structure.

Here is a few more pics Photos

And a preliminary report from somone on site
<a href="http://64.226.170.141/cgi-bin/Interchan ... nterchange discussion

This might be the final nail in the coffin for this Summer's Fair of the Iron Horse - Or the impetus to turn it into a whole hog fundraising event.

LoL.... it looks like the orginal COLOR TV converters that were sold in the 50's-60's for B/W TV's, You know, those filters that you set up in front of the tv where the sky was blue and the everything else was green :-) Actually, it is amazing to think that something like this could happen. Has there been an estimate on the cost oof repairs and more importantly, what about the equipment that you can see under the carnage?

addendum: Here is the link to the story, but haven't found photos yet.

Officially, no. But guys working from memory say that 2 locos, 2 wood coaches, a wood caboose and a wood boxcar are under that mess for sure.

I think we can assume the the wood cars are probably heavily damaged if not destroyed. There is a loco in the one picture which seems to somewhat okay, but sans cab. The caboose also clearly visible and has a large hole in the cupola.

The "list"

Post by Allen_from_CHT »

If this guy is right the section that fell was over some of the oldest artifacts including a LOT of very old locos The list posted on RyPN says "Andrew Jackson, Memnon, William Mason, Camel, Thatcher Perkins, wooden coach, I think we're up to the track leading outside to the door where PM 11 was, then another loco, caboose/WM bus, Ma & PA baggage/mail", should have been where the roof isn't

Another "list"

Post by Allen_from_CHT »

Much the same as the first, but further identifying the artifacts - anybody have "before" pics of any of these handy?

0-8-0 Memnon
4-4-0 Wm Mason (may still be elsewhere for restoration work)
4-6-0 Thatcher Perkins
4-6-0 Davis Camel
2-6-0 J.C. Davis
2-8-0 A.J. Cromwell
CNJ 1868 Wason Coach (one of 2, other in car shop)
SW-1 PM11
B&O I-5D caboose C2222

There is no "official" response yet on what the actual damaged artifacts are. I'm pretty certain that there hasn't really been time to assess the damage, plus there is always the nagging fear that further sections may come down

For those wanting to help, the best (only) choice right now is to make a donation, I'm pretty sure they will soon need all the unencumbered capital they can get..

No doubt there'll be major damage, and they'll need funds. However, I would respectfully suggest that any donations be specifically earmarked for roundhouse and/or eqipment restoration.
