K4s Photos

Post by JBodenmann »

Hans asked for some photos of the K4s so here you go. I like the original chicken coop pilots that the engines were built with. Like the originals this one was all steel.

More cab. There is still much to do, the drip strip over the windows and the spoiler that wraps on the rear of the roof.

Here are the little window frames for the cab windows. They are made of beech. Beech is a very nice wood for model building, especially if you are modeling oak. Beech is a member of the oak family and has the appearance of miniature oak with the correct little rays and dots. But it has a very fine closed grain and takes a finish quite nicely. These little frames are made on a router table with some commercially available tiny little dadoe cutters. You will have to make a mandrel to hold them and a spacer to go between them to cut the little tenons. The tricky part is to make a fixture to hold the little pieces. Keep them fingers safe! The frames are made to accept 1/16" glass. This glass is available at stained glass shops. They mostly use it to press flowers between. Too Much Fun!

Here is the Johnson bar. I have wondered how that name came to be. I really enjoy making little pieces like this. A delightful little puzzle! When sizing up a model locomotive one of the first places I look is in the cab. To me a locomotive that has a well modeled cab is much more fun to operate. It helps to create the illusion that it is a "real" locomotive and that the operator is an oversize gomer. More of a connection with the days of steam.

The fire door was just hacked out of 1/4" steel. Cut on the dotted line with the good ol' oxy acetylene torch, get out the angle grinder (eraser) and have at it. To me the fire door is a focal point of the cab and helps create that stem loco atmosphere.

Here is a completed marker. The lenses are ground glass. I posted some info on grinding your own lenses a while back.
