Unknown frame

Post by Mike Walsh »

Gents,

I have an unknown frame... It is of the x-6-x variety. Judging from the size of the frame, I suspect either a 4-6-2 or 4-6-4. Unfortunately, in my contact with the owner of LE, it was determined that it's NOT a LE product. I can also attest to this, as a friend is building his 1" pacific, and the driver centers do not match. IIRC, its 7" centers for the one i have, and 6.5" for the LE stuff... or vice versa.

Here are some photos:

i hope to hear from some out there. I am wondering if it's an HK Coventry product.... I don't know who else would make a 1" Pacific (or hudson..)

please let me know.

Thanks!

If is is 1" scale....Coventry didn't design it. H.J. Coventry made two 1" scale kits, and B&O I-6 4-4-0, and a B&O Ten Wheeler. He also built a 1" scale Great Western (England) 4-4-0, but not a Pacific or Hudson.
Now.....this isn't to say that somebody didn't take Coventry's design and scale it it up to 1" scale. You need to remember that having a wide variety of designs commercially available is a recent thing. Back in the 1930's, 40's and up into the 1960's, it was a lot more common to build from scratch. The other possibility, and my first choice as a guess, is a !" scale Friend's Models (or Yankee Shop) Pacific.

The frame looks like it could be a Hudson frame. The cradle casting looks to be more like a Northern.

The only two 1" scale Hudsons which I know of were the Henry Hospers Hudson (New York State) and the George Tapping Hudson (Toronto, Canada now with MPP?).

Trainman4602 met Henry Hospers so he might know if additional castings were ever produced.

By the way, my loco notes also say that David S. also (was producing) produced castings for a 1.5" scale Hudson. David?
