My 1906 Locomotive Dictionary lists a 4-6-0 as a "10-Wheel" and a 4-4-0 as a "8-Wheel American" under the Whyte system of classification. The 4-4-0 was commonly referred to as either an "American" or as a "Eight-Wheeler".

OK, what the meaning of 'IS" is... Look in the directories of later dates, like the 40's, and the vernacular changes, you will mostly find the later "Mogul" and "American" speak. The technology evolves, and by the 40's there were few small engines left, being lost already to history. The earlier 8 wheeler and ten wheeler, slang moved forward.

You are not wrong, just lost in the trails of history.

I stand corrected in the 'Whyte' listing.

Hi Benjamin

I put Walschaert valve gear on the camelback I built. I used Allen cylinders and steam chest. It runs great so it can be done. I am going to attach a picture of it and this is the first picture I have attached so I hope it will work.

Marti and Ron Newlon put baker on their Allen Mogul after wearing out the stephenson on it. Its a really nice running locomotive and they seem very happy with it.

I need to correct myself. Walscherts will have less error in it than Stephenson.

Thanks for all of the pictures. I think I like the looks of Walschaert vale gear over Baker valve gear.

The one big advantage of Baker over Walschaerts is that all the wear in Baker was confined to a few needle bearings. Everything rotated, nothing 'slid.'

Bang in a new set of bearings, and the gear was back to square one, day one.

Not so with Walschaerts - there are two critical areas that could / would wear, taking more time to maintain / adjust.

Not that this is a problem with our models, but it was a concern on full-size, and was a major selling point by Baker / Piliod.

Ya I agree with Bill on the Baker... thats why I'm putting baker on my Ps-4 over walscheart but the interesting thing is that many of the Ps-4s were built with baker but then switched to walscheart later on and the last Ps-4s were built with walscheart.... interesting...

A mogul originally built by the late A. R. "Dutch" Boysen is in my home shop being restored.
Although based upon the "Allen" mogul (Dutch used his own driver castings) it has Walschaerts valve gear.

I own 2 of these Solar/Allen 10 wheelers. They have Allen cylinders made up to look like piston valve locomotives. One I completed in Feb. 2006. I am now working on the second one. I hope to have it complete by the Winter Meet in Florida. If complete it will be for sale and if someone wants to buy it I will take it to run. It will be a coal burner. Enclosed is a photo of it so far.

They used Allen castings for drivers, cylinders, stacl, and dome pieces along with tender trucks. Everything was by CNC machining of which I know nothing about!

8 of these locomotives were partially built by Solar Tool and Die Co. First 4 were sold around 1999-2000. Last 4 were sold when thay went out of business in 2003. Chassis were complete and are as fine as a watch. I think the bracket for the valve gear is a Little Engines casting. It is 7&1/2 inch gauge.

The post photo is of my first one running in FL. in 2006

Bruce Saylor, in PA.
