As there are such knowledgeable persons here, again I am going to pick brains as much as possible. This time it is on NYC Hudson major appliance manufacturers/models. Primarily interested in the J1 series but if you have information on J3 throw it in as well. This is what I know or think I know:

Booster - Franklin Type C-2 double acting with internal booster exhaust (J1a-b),

Feed water Heater - Elesco (model?) on J1a -also on some J1b's, remaining J1b's Coffin (model?),

Power Reverse - Precision?,

Whistle - six chime on passenger locos, five chime on freight - Nathan?,

Drop Coupler - Standard Type E,

Headlight - Sunbeam (J1a-b). Pyle National on later series?,

Bell - size and manufacturer? Pierce automatic bell ringer chain operated,

Smoke box door hinges - Okadee?,

Lifting Injector - Nathan Simplex - Thank you Living Legend,

Lubricator - Nathan D-7? (or also Detroit)?,

Air Pumps - Westinghouse 8-1/2" Duplex steam operated cross compound? Single air pump located on RHS pilot deck with ELesco feed water heaters (feed water heater pump located on LHS). Double cross compound air pumps, RHS, LHS on pilot deck with Coffin feed water heaters.,

Low pressure feed water pumps from tender on later J1's- Make, model?

High pressure boiler feed water pump (after feed water heater)?,

Boiler check valves?,

Boiler safety valves?,

Turbogenerator - Pyle National - model?,

Automatic Stoker - Duplex Type D-3 Standard Stoker on early J1's, BK Type Standard Stoker on later J1's,

Brake Cylinders on engine and tender - Type, make?,

I don't have any referance sources handy at the moment to check out/verify one or two of my answers. But off the top of my head, the J1/J3's used.....

Feed water Heater - Elesco (model?) on J1a -also on some J1b's, remaining J1b's Coffin (model?)

J3's used Worthington feedwater heaters.... Some J1's had their Elesco heaters replaced by Worthingtons. NYC didn't use Coffins (just the BA) on their Hudsons as I recall.

Power Reverse - Precision?

Franklin F1 "Precision" screw reverse on the J1's. Franklin F2's on the J3's. As delivered from ALCO, the J3's reverse was mounted inside of the frame.... The J'3's reverse was later relocated to under the running board

Smoke box door hinges - Okadee?,

Okadee

Lubricator - Nathan D-7? (or also Detroit)?

As I recall, all of the brake equipment was supplied by Westinghouse. On the J3 (and J1), two air pumps were mounted on the front footplate. Cross compound pumps.... don't remember if the pump size was 8-1/2x120 or 8-1/2x150.

Low pressure feed water pumps from tender on later J1's- Make, model?

High pressure boiler feed water pump (after feed water heater)?

On the J3's (and J1's with the Elesco's replaced with Worthington FWH) Worthington hot water pump. Don't remember if they also had Worthington's turbo cold waterpump or not. Not sure what make/model feed pump used on the J1's with Elesco FWH.

Boiler check valves?

Think they were Nathan's mounted horizontaly. Had water cut off valve

Boiler safety valves?

Pretty sure they were Manning-Maxwell-Moore "Consolidated"

Coal Pusher -?

Not aware of the J1 or J3 ever having coal pushers

Fire door - Franklin #8 Butterfly?

Franklin. Not sure what model no. Most likely the 16"x20" size.

Throttle - Make, model, multiple poppet valve?

American multiple poppet valve (smokebox) throttle

An item often overlooked but used by the NYC on most of their later steamers of modern times was the Loco Valve Pilot made by the Valve Pilot Corporation.

This appliance is seldom ever modeled in live steam but was a part of the NYC until the end of steam.

Thank you Robert and LivingLegend for the information answering my questions.

I have been told that most of the information and descriptive details on these locomotive appliances would have been contained in Railway Mechanical Engineer (RME) articles of the period. I have checked here with the Toronto Public Libraries and they do not have this publication. I am just wondering if anything exists anywhere on the web, in a University Library/Historical Society or ..?

I have checked with the NYCSHS and they do not have any RME.

Thank you for this reference. I hadn't come across it.

I should have been a little more specific in my request. The RME period of interest would be from 1927-1931.

The Toronto Public Libraries do have the Railway Age journal. Just have to see what they have.

Does anyone have an instruction manual or drawings for the throttle valves made by the American throttle company, New York, N.Y. !
These were a multi-port poppet valve arranged to open sequentially larger poppet valves as the cam lever shaft was rotated.
The tell tale is a shaft mounted lever protruding out of the smoke box at right angle to the center plane and nearly at the top of the smoke box.

Some parts are appliances, and some are appurtenances.

There is a list of all the appliances and appurtenances for the UP Challenger or Big Boys, on here years ago. Seems like it was either a royalties list, or perhaps just a list all the pieces that were not ALCO produced. Its been so long I can not remember if it was an Alco document or a UP document.

Maybe one of the members remembers it. That would be good to reference for this post.

I remember that being a Very long list.

The pumps were 8.5" x 150. Air Pump governor was likely the #8 (AD-A).
