Coal Source

Post by TDukes »

Can anybody recommend a source of good coal for our steamers in the phoenix area? I was planning on making a day trip next week for unrelated business but would like to pick up some much needed coal if it can be found. I have been using Pocahontas coal with great success but shipping kills me.

Thanks,
Todd

Todd,

You might search on line for:

GCC Energy, LLC (KING Coal Mine)
4424 County Road 120
Hesperus, CO 81326
970-385-4528

They might have good coal but it's not very near Phoenix, about 500 miles away, just West of Durango, CO

Good Luck,
Terry

Thanks for the responses. I was hoping for something in the Phoenix area. I heard rumor that there are some blacksmith shops in the area that sell good coal but have not found them on the internet. Does anybody know where MLS gets coal?

tdukes,

Aren't there coal mines on some of the Indian Reservations near Phoenix.

We saw an exposed coal seam on one reservation North East of Phoenix

while on a trip to Maricopa Live Steamers.

The Indians used it for fuel. It looked like good soft coal in their coal bins.

The reservation was on a Mesa, and East of the Grand Canyon

100 or so miles.

Can't remember the tribe name cause it's been a couple of years.

There's a coal mine east of Cow Springs on 160. The power plant in Page, AZ. has their own little electrified railroad to haul the coal from that mine to the power plant. The last time I was out that way, I thought I saw a sign saying that they sold coal...

Gasp!

You kidding?

Last time I checked coal prices (early 90's, in Utah), a ton of slack cost $55.

All the cost is in the shipping and packaging in the smaller sizes.

Someone could make good money ordering a full truckload or train car load to an area that is ill-supplied and sell it little by little like penn coal. Lots of requests for this after I started getting free buckets of coal from the local cement plant, which imports it by the train load from utah or ohio for their on-site coal fired power plant.

At those prices, you could get a RR car full from Penn Keystone delivered and sell it for profit.
