Looking for products from alternate suppliers

Post by Orrin »

Seeing as how my Sulphur Springs Steam Models shopping list is worthless, does anyone know where I might get these items that were on it?

FIBER PAPER: The same asbestos free Refractory Ceramic fiber but in a "paper" sheet 1/8" thick, compressible to less than 1/32" thickness. Same material as used in many Gauge 1 (& larger) locomotive smokeboxes and boiler/burner wrappers.

FIBER BLANKET: 1/4" Thick, compressible to less than 1/8" thickness if desired.

Drawings
PM-30 Vertical multi-tube boiler for single cyl. engines up to 2.1/4" bore D $10.00

PM-31 Vertical multi-tube boiler for twin cyl. engines up to 2.1/4" bore D $10.00

PM-36 5" test boiler, 80 psi E $13.75

Publication
An Introduction to ALCOHOL FIRING, R. Loxley: A short course in Alcohol firing & setting alcohol wicks on Ga. 1 locomotives. PK-100, E, 12 p

None of my other catalogs list these items. I'd be eternally grateful if you could direct me to alternate suppliers.

Best regards,
Orrin

I found this:
http://www.nmia.com/~vrbass/steam/stmmedia.htm

An Introduction to Alcohol Firing
by Roger Loxley
1995. Sidestreet Bannerworks. 12 pp. $3.00.
Sidestreet Bannerworks
PO Box 460222
Denver CO 80246 USA

If the drawings are PM Research, you should be able to get them from them:

McMaster Carr has insulation materials.

They don't talk about compressibility, though.

Orrin, I believe that the ceramic fiber paper you seek is available from McMaster-Carr, I think they have the fiber blanket as well and in reasonable size quantities. I am about to order some, I hope this is what we seek, I have not actually seen it in my hand but think it is what I am looking for to insulate the boiler and cylinders. Check out their web catalog. OS supplied my boiler wrapper material. They probably can sell you some. The pattern supplied for the boiler was very complicated, but one of my friends came up with the answer. We drew in the pattern on the computer, then used my laser engraver to cut out the pattern in pressboard. We then sandwitched the fiber material between the pattern and a whole sheet of board, then used an Xacto to cut the material through the holes. Perfect!

Fibrefrax ceramic.

You can get it from many places, once you know the industrial name.

Small quantities may be tough though.

As mentioned, Mc-Master is where I also get it. Their prices may not be the lowest, but you can get small quantities, which may offset the 'ouch' a bit.

Thank you, all! I'm very grateful for the assistance, especially the My Hobby Store link. I'm as many collecting vertical boiler drawings as I can find before deciding on a design.

Thank you for reminding me of McMaster-Carr. I've ordered from them many times and am a very satisfied customer. My ol' brain just didn't think of them, this time.

Best regards,

Orrin
