Tipping My Hat

Post by Steve Bratina » Mon Mar 29, 2010 7:42 pm

I have been working away on 3/4" freight cars and began two tank cars and two mill gons right after the MLS New Years Run. The weather was nice enough lately to put the paint on one tank car and the two NKP mill gons. I did the lettering on the tank car tonight and following the Late George Dimond lead of lettering a car for a known person, I thought that I would tip my hat to two brothers who were well known in the live steam circles. Thus the H&J Turnbull Oils, steam oil tank car.
I still need to add the hose bags and then do some weathering but here it is for your "peroosle".
The other tank car and the two gons are on simmer right now as with the fine weather we are having, I will be out steamin'.

On behalf of H & J Turnbull, I say thank you for the honour.

I take note the number on the car as well

So who the heck is H & J Turnbull? They were Harry and his older brother Jim Turnbull. Jim was my grandfather on my Mom's side. Here's a photo by my other grandfather, A.W. Leggett who was also a live steamer (one day I'll write the family story down). Taken at the Pioneer Valley LS in Southwick, MA on May 21, 1967. That's one of Jim's loco's, now owned by a good buddy of mine at WLS.
