I got the porting machined this morning. The saddle is machined. Now I need to drill the steam passages, drill and tap faces for covers. Then I'll make the valve chests.

I got the steam ways machined. I had to do some math and calculate the area per hole size in regards to the steam ports to ensure adequate exhausting and not to build up a ton of back pressure.

Time for the dremel tool.

It will flow close to twice as much if you clean up the rough stuff and radius all the edges.

Here are a few pictures of the rear cylinder covers coming to life. The blanks were cut from 1.25" plate and machined. Still have to drill and tap crosshead guide holes, decorative cover holes and tap the major bore for the packing gland.

I know this sounds silly, but I'd love to have holes in the center of the leading pilot axle to mount a metal rod with a flag attached to the end, sticking out far enough for the flag to be seen from the cab. One glance and you'd know if the pilot was off or skating. Sure would come in handy on tracks where the pilot may be running on ballast instead of metal. I've even seen a steamer with mounts for small mirrors on the pilot deck, but that's hard to see from a distance...

Lost my engine brakes on one particularly hard derailment. Tore the rod clean off the leading "6 horse rig". Almost made the weeds, and that was three feet from the switch!

Just finished machining the steam passages from the Valve chest. Next, machine the valve chest and the valves.

Just one more for now. The valve chests were water jet cut. I will be picking them up tomorrow.

Great to see this coming together after the numerous delays with the castings.
