Pamela:

How are you machining the back side of the rings? (the side that was faced off the parent stock) There is not a whole lot to grab with a chuck or spud.

Thanks,

Rick,

I used a .016" parting blade and it left a very smooth finish.

and both sides will get lapped.

this past weekend was a bust....

saturday I taught a class in basic machine technics.....

and sunday I just wasn't feeling it and laid around all day doing absolutely nothing.....rare occurance.

last night I started in on the second op machining jig for the rings.

got the spud done and the cap almost done. will finish that up this evening and do the compression sleeve.

hopefully split the rings and mount up the first batch.

evening toonsters,

the pump sleeves are all turned...will take them to work to do the bore.....run into length issues on the short bed sherline. then the wtaer passage notch.

you will notice one of the sleves is steel...will get into that a bit later.

the shuttle valve bushings are near done....turned..faced to length.....and the steam passage reference grooves cut. next operation on those is drilling and shaping the rectangular holes. roatry table/mill operation. eariler i goofed and used the wrong material for the pilot valve bushings. was supposed to use the 1/2"...dunno why I grabbed the 5/8". anyway..came up short on the shuttle bushings and have to order a bit more on monday to finish out the 7 needed.

went back to the pump bodies now . doing some of the baloney work as jack would say. the inlet drain plugs....a relief hole here...and a dummy inspection cover over there.

photos....enjoy

evening toonsters.

finished up the bottom detail work on the pump bodies....drilled a drain hole...drilled and tapped the 2 water drain plugs and mounted the faux inspection cover.

have two pump sleeves to bore yet...should have those done by weekend. then get the water port slot.

the peice of 5/8" bronze will be in tomorrow to make the last shuttle sleeve.

tomorrow going to start on the steam cylinder mounting on the pump bodies...that will be done in several steps...all on the mill.

good morning toonsters,

wanted to post a couple things this morning cause I was so pleased with the way the came outwanted to share.

last night was a mindlessly numbing work session.....I turned out 96 5-40 studs for cylinder to pump body mounting.

EGADS...if I never see a length of threaded rod again it will be to soon.

once that was done I jumped into the shuttle valve spools....

the print shows them made from 4 parts and two screws.....two end spools..a center spool...a retaining rod and 2 small screws to hold it all together.

I decided making it all from one piece was a better route...more difficult...but everything remains perfectly concentric.

discussed this with David Moore and he agreed...it would be better as one piece...but one has to be very careful with the numbers or the ports will be all kaddywompus.

anyway...here's a snappie of the studs and the first of 7 spools.
looks just like the spools our of hydraulic selenoid valves

Pamela

BTW..the spool is all of 1.090" long and .355 diameter

the ring slots were cut with a .0315 grooving bit. and the curved reliefs were cut with a special form tool I made with a wire EDM machine.

figured out a different way...which will be much better.

set that aside for the moment and started in on the 84 valve rings.....got 33 turned out
