yes, Jack did the basic tank assembly finished off with one of his nice backup lights. Bruno took it from there. a nice touch adding the radio box to conceal electrical switches. train brake control is also tender mounted. decals from Miracle Graphics.

i'm glad to report that NKP #753 is back at Riverside and running well, but still working through a few minor bugs not helped much by the last few 100° weekends of the year.

with some final detail parts including the front number plate now in place and with a break in the heat last weekend, i finally got a chance to snap a few photos...

This model accurately depicts why NKP Berks are considered among the most formidable and beloved of steam locomotives. Stunningly beautiful!

there should be quite a gathering of NKP hardware at the fall meet. joining NKP #753 should be Tom Lawson driving NKP #777 along with Gil Baird's #765 Berkshire.

appreciate the comments/ compliments on this 5 year project and though i'll take credit for funding the work, Bruno Platzer (Alco West) did the majority of the build and detail, though others had a hand in the construction. rumor has it that two more NKP Berkshires are currently under construction at Alco West.

cheers...gary

Here's one of the latest NKP Berkshires to hit the rails, the 759. This showed up at the Riverside fall meet a couple of weeks ago. I did a lot of the chassis work and the engine is being detailed by Bruno Platzer of Las Vegas.

Well, I figured it was time for making a contribution to the discussion of building these fine 2-8-4's. My mentor and friend, Dick Dute, has been building a C&O 2700 class K-4 2-8-4 for a number of years now. Following are a few photos showing his progress to date. Dick chose to go the route of fabricating major components like the cradle, main frames, frame spreaders and one piece bearing boxes.

These are older photos that Dick sent me yesterday. I have a few more photos showing the chassis rotated on the rotisserie that he fabricated and will post those in a subsequent post. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Rob Gardner

Here is the chassis on the rotisserie with the driver wheel sets and rods staged below.

The Berks use 2 brake cylinders, one for each pair of drivers, as seen mounted on horizontal frame spreaders, fore and aft of the Baker Valve Gear support member.

All three boiler courses and the outer wrapper of the firebox are laid out here. Dick is currently having the courses welded together this winter.

Here are some more up-close photos of various parts of the chassis that I took during my visit yesterday.
