Little Engines or Coles

Post by DJSteamer3017 »

To my brothers in Live Steam,

Which is the better 1" Scale 0-4-0, Is it LE or Coles? Hopefully if time and funds permit this year would like to start one or the other. I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this matter. So this is also something up mattmason Alley, if you care to share your recent experiences with the Little Steamer, please do. And if anyone has had experience with the Little Engines 0-4-0 please do same.

The link to mattmason's Coles 0-4-0 Build.

The only thing that matters is which do you like best?

I purchased a Little Engines 1" 0-4-0 tank engine a couple years ago and I love it. Originally finished in 1978 it was in need of some TLC. It had a leaky copper boiler and pretty much needed a complete rebuild. I fixed the boiler and did the complete rebuild including new valve gear bushings, crank pins and all new plumbing. It's a great little engine that is easy to transport and a good puller. I would recommend it if you can get the castings for one.

Steve - Yes Ed McConnell built my engine. I believe I am the 5th owner from the FLLS club. The first think Ed told me when I completed the rebuild was that I painted it the wrong color. I just told him to think of it as a really really dark green.

David I have built the Coles 040 and my Dad has the Little Engnes 060 that he purchased as chasis running on air from a club member.

I like the Little Engines design better. It seems more solid and a better runner. I like the larger bore and stroke also of the Little Engines. I would recommend building the 060 if you go with Little Engiens. The 040 is the same size with center driver left out. The 040 does not look right to me there is to much space between the drivers. Since the engne is the same length and weight you have better pulling with the 060.
