Local live steamer Russ Moore passed away this Sunday from complications related to pneumonia and an ongoing battle with cancer.
Russ was a hilarious guy with a lot of stories and a great sense of humor - he could talk your ear off for hours but you wouldn't ever get bored, there was always a new story to hear. He went to a lot of meets together with his good friend Jerry Roseborough. Last year Russ had the pleasure of finishing his large scratch built diesel locomotive and running it at various local tracks - his first ever project.
Russel also had a love of antique farm equipment and tractors, and was a heavy equipment operator for his day job. He was a member of Sage Brush Short Line Railroad in Ridgecrest and the now defunct Kern County Live Steamers and could often be found at Bitter Creek where they had their regular campsite at "A Number One" siding.
Here's a couple of recent pictures forwarded on by Tom Fagan of Russ enjoying his very powerful diesel engine at Jerry's 'Kern Valley Lines' home track in Weldon, CA which Russ helped to build. I will miss Russel's presence a lot, he was one of the people I always looked forward to seeing. Green lights and straight tangents buddy.
