H&NERY,
We're using 5" copper for the 3/4" scale version.

Thank-you, this looks like an interesting little project that I think I am going to tackle, I am just trying to get material gathered together. Zach

Zach,
Terrific! I hope you enjoy building the Tom Thumb as much as I have.

We're very willing to share advice/experiences. Bill opened a builders discussion on the LSORR forum as support to their published articles. He'll be happy to answer any questions there.

Guys:

We are running a thread on the Live Steam web site to answer questions, provide any additional information required.

bbs.livesteam.net

Tim and I have decided that we really want to request that all queries go there, instead of us duplicating replies in multiple places.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I recently completed my Tom Thumb boiler and hydro tested it. I am using an old set of Friends castings.

Steven,
Nice work!
Are you building the original Friends version or working from Bill Shields New Tom Thumb drawings?

What is the height of the Tom Thumb boiler? The reason I ask is that I recently acquired a boiler kit to build a 5 inch "shop boiler", described by An article by Tubal Cain in a 1978 Model Engineer magazine. I was wondering if these dimensions were close. The diameter is 5 inches and the height is about 10 inches without a top. My thought is that that the Tom Thumb could play double duty as a test boiler for other projects and still be used as a locomotive for my operations.

Another Question regarding the Tom Thumb Locomotive, I have all kinds of 3" round bar stock, That should work OK for the wheels? The pans call for 3 3/8" stock. To keep the height of the locomotive as per the plans I will just have to adjust my pedestal length to compensate for this, am I correct by thinking this or am I missing something? Thanks, Zach
