Very nice !!! Great stack talk, and some very very clean loco's!!!
A few things struck me.. One, they really accelerate out of the station at quite a clip dont they ??
And secondly, I was absolutely stunned at the speed he took the crossover in the yard at

Hello Hudson,
Thank you for posting that nice link! Indeed one could enjoy the strong going of the two totally different mikes.
I was lucky to have an outstanding cab ride on the 141 R 1244 which in fact is a light Micado of the USRA type.
1340 of them had been built for France after WW II and did a fine job til end of the steam area in 1968. Just slight adaptions were made like left hand driving, green colour and typical french stile windshields. And hook / buffers replaced the automatic coupler of course!
They were well known for fast acceleration on full throttle, indeed. About 2 500 hp in combination with a friction weight of 180 000 pounds they were the "European Northern types" regarding their outstanding abilities!
The photo shows that sort of going at full throttle (175 psi in the valve chamber versus 10 psi exaust preasure as the readings are showing). First time I needed ear shields!
And there are models of course, both 7 1/4 " and 5 ". To equip the latter, I built a small oilburner of a capacity of 1 gallon / h, please look the photo.

Hello Asteamhead,
I had my footplate experience on a 141 R in regular service in June or July 1962 at Evian (France).
The engine was shunting at this station. The crew invited me afterwards for a glass of wine
in a restaurant near the station.
This was a very nice but rather short footplate experience.
Best regards and happy steaming,
Hudson

Beautiful video and beautiful locos as well. I am absolutely appalled though that they cannot make them run cleaner than this. No wonder steam was perceived to have no future on a "modern" railway ...

Do you by chance have any information on your burner? Like maybe drawings.

Of course they can run cleaner that this. Dont be ridiculous. Many of these images were done for a photo opportunity. Of course they can run her clean. Its just a matter of air, fuel, and atomizing stean and I'm sure her fireman knows about all of the above...stenella wrote:Beautiful video and beautiful locos as well.
