2" Scale A1 Pacific

Post by Oktrainboys »

Hello All, Really enjoy this forum. The discussion, talent and dedication to the live steam hobby is most enjoyable!
With the recent talk about GGLS, and with so many GGLS members on this board, I thought you might like to see the covergirl on August 1987's MODELTEC Magazine in 2013. "Tintern Abbey", a 2" scale 7.5" gauge English A1 Pacific locomotive was pictured on the GGLS turntable under full steam on that day in 1987. John Haines of Northern California had just completed "Tintern Abbey" in 1984 by downsizing by 50% the 15" Gauge live steam locomotives of the "Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch" Railway on the Kent coast in SE England...after he visited the railway in the 1970's. She is oil fired and has 12.25" drivers....a real beauty. Hope you enjoy.
Mr. Haines, a devoted lover of the steam locomotive might visit this forum, so John, this one's for you!

My son has become quite accomplished with live steam....both oil and coal. Such a great hobby for these young kids.

If the locomotive is scaled down by 50% from the RH&D loco, it is technically a 6" scale model! :)
The RH&D locomotives are not really models, but in fact they are money earning locomotives that just happen to be 15" gauge.

so, are the Romney engines all freelance designs? I thought they were scaled from prototype for some reason.

Most of the Romney Pacific's closely followed Greasley's new LNER A1 design. "Canadian Pacific" followed more of a North American Pacific design, not sure about the mountains.

The RH&D locomotives are not scale models of the LNER A-1, but they were influenced by them as the designer Henry Greenly was a close friend of Sir Nigel Gresley. The Mountains were also completely designed by Henry Greenly and are not scale models of any particular prototype.
The original engines were built by the Davey-Paxman company to Henry Greenly's designs.

The RH&D engines are roughly 4" scale, or 1/3 size in overall proportions, running on 15" gauge track (roughly 1/4 size). They were designed to perform to a certain standard. Scale 1/4 engines couldn't do what these engines do every day. The drivers are 26" diameter IIRC.

Drivers 24" and a fraction actually.....but indeed yes Rob, they sure put in the revenue miles, often thousands of miles in a single steaming season.
