Hi steamer,


for my current project im looking for pictures of GSC engine beds.
Specialy im looking for the GSC engine bed of the J's N&W.
A few month ago i bought the enginen bed drawings by the NWHS.
The drawings are ver good, but for a better understanding i would like to have
a few pictures only of the engine bed, didnt found something on NWHS.
Mayby you guys can help me ....??

very good stuff, for sure. My problem is that i need the J frame.
Any picture of that?Could it be possible that these Cyclopedia
has any pictures of the J engine bed?

Suggest you get back in contact with the NWHS. Most major U.S. railroads had photos taken of their locos under construction. Possibly the NWHS will have a photo of the engine bed in their archives.

BTW....

Engine bed frames are all pretty much the same in overall design. Some may have major design addditions/changes, tho. Example: The UP's FEF 2 & 3 engine beds had integral cast air reservoirs inside the frame.

Jim Krieder has posted info on the berk engine bed previously and I think Chris has seen that post.

Chris, I'm assuming you've seen the ASME pdf? It doesn't have what you need but is useful for other things. Just a well done pamphlet. If you haven't seen it before it's here:

I was going to say (after reading LL's comments) I'm surprised there are no build photos in the N&W archives. The UP FEF class beds look really similar. I know what your looking for but haven't seen any pics specific to the J class. Personally, I like the way Krieder approached this especially the 1.5/1.6 issue.

Here is a shot of the first work on the "J" engine Bed- 5"gauge.
Only the thick was milled from 20mm down to 18mm, for sure from both side
because of the forces, coming in during the producing process.
no problems after the mill, both sides are straight, next step, feed the mill and let it run.

Hello steamchris,

Maybe I found a photo of the J class GSC loco bed in Locomotive Cyclopedia issue 1947 on page 8-608.
It's not mentioned to be part of the J explecitely but construction which includes air reservoir and brackets fo two front CCompound air pumps as time of the puplication make it likely to me.
Please go on with your project and let's know when you managed the next steps!

yes i´ve read J.Kreiders post of that awesome Berkshire, a great Lady!!!
What i would do with the GSC Pics is,train an easier understanding of the really good
but really complex NWHS engine bed drawing. Next part will be creating CAD Datas
and feed the CNC-mill. To create this i would like to have one of those pics.
One of the cyclopedia-pics shows a frame that comes really close to the J beds,
the big Airtank and the points on that the two Pumps will sit, looking similar.
I will have a second look on the NWHS archiv, mayby i was searching again for wrong words.
That happend the last time as i searched for the engine bed drawings, my mistake was that i searched
for "frame", i thought i found all the frames of the NW but no engine bed ,that i searched for.
At this time you guys helped me out!!! Like other times before, thanks for that!!!
