One Inch Scale Fan Page Idea

Post by DJSteamer3017 »

To my Live Steam Comrades!!
Raise of Hands that are active in 1" Scale Railroading? Not to toot my own horn here (no pun intended) but want to help in getting fellow hobbyist in 1" Scale as it' seems it's been growing a bit in recent years. As we all know mattmason is the 1" Guru. He had an idea of a 1" Scale Ramble which I think is brilliant!! Now if it's fitting, we should create a 1" Scale Fan Page on Facebook, so we can post pictures and videos of clubs and home tracks, and projects and operating pieces of equipment, and so forth. For those in Europe feel free to post on the 5" Gauge Activity as well.

Below is a YouTube playlist I've Created with nothing but 1" Scale Railroading and a dabble of 5" Gauge.

I was thinking of the same thing but for Tinkerbell scales but as a phpBB forum for those who are constructing, rebuilding or operating steam locomotives.

1-in is an interesting cross-scale… ground track or elevated, ride-on or ride-behind.

I administrate the phpBB forum for my club.

David,

That's a nice playlist you put together. It has most of the well known 1" tracks and a fair number of other ones. It is nice to see what is happening where and also some of the equipment that people in other areas have. Our neck of the woods seems to have a lot of the RS-3 and Pacific locos as the main types people have. Good to see some rather powerful looking 2-8-2 and 4-8-2 out there counterpointed by the 0-4-0 and similar small things. Many of which do very impressive work too.

They are indeed Iron Pony. Joe Devlin made some in 1.5" scale too, they would have looked good behind a certain ATSF Hudson under construction.

I don't know how many of the St Croix RR people will chime in here, but we have a fair number (at least 10 local and another 10 remote) of 4.75" gauge locomotive owners, are always looking for more, and try to make visiting folks feel welcome. The club has 4300 feet of 4.75" on the ground, and 1100 feet of mixed small-scale elevated track. We've recently begun a total rebuild of the elevated and although our 2013 construction season has come to a close we'll be hitting that hard in the spring.

It's a nice size to transport, and I think the 1.5"/1.6" scale narrow gauge on 4.75" track is especially appealing. I wish there were a few more suppliers of parts such as loco drivers and cylinders.

At LALS we have about a good dozen of us regulars. Mixed bag of steam and electric. We try very hard to keep the track in good shape.

I think this is a good idea.

I also think that Matt Mason's concept of The National Small Scales Meet is an excellent one. We have hosted it twice in the past, GGLS also, and I would like to see it at any track that has a 1 inch scale help host one.

I should have included in my original comments that while I strongly feel some common site for 1" users to share is a good idea, I'm not so comfortable with Facebook. So idea ++, platform --.

I'd say that our layout, Finger Lakes Live Steamers might be a good choice for a meet in another year or two. Right now we have about 3800 feet of track on the ground. Makes a very nice folded loop to loop for about 14 minutes run time. You might traverse the same track on a few spots but in opposite directions. We are using the normal claim/release punch buttons for manual signal blocks for the single track sections.

But right now our major work is adding stub sidings here and there for operations. We did some testing and found that some of our existing spring switches were too tight and would derail a number of 'revenue' cars. We are addressing that but it requires replacing a few turnout controls and some of the point rail parts so they 'spring' better. So we hope to have a couple of successful sessions in 2014. We had hoped to get to that this year but some testing of cars found our problems in the track. Also we found we are way short of cars for a session by about 50%. For the number of industry spots, expected trains that would be 'on the main' at one time, and another train or three in the yard being made up or classified gave me the 50% short. And that is with the standard formula of only 50% of the track spots occupied at one time.

Once we've got some of these shortcomings fixed up we'd be a reasonable candidate for a meet.

I didn't know the 1.6" car were still available, but there is a link in Joe's history.
