3D Printed Big Boy

Post by LivingLegend »

Not live steam, but interesting to look at.... A 3D printed Big Boy.

700 to 800 hours drawing in SolidWorks, and 1000 hours printing time. Finished engine, less tender, is around 6 feet long.

...And printed on a slow and low resolution Makerbot printer at that.

If he knew of his areas livesteamer group, and was approached by a freindly individual in that group who offered to introduce him to the livesteam community, he might just consider building his locomotive out of metal, and participating in the community in short order.

Another example of why you should build the tender first :)

Pretty cool, I don't thing I could do all that modeling in even 1000 hrs...

While not a complete set, Big Boy drawings are still available from Live Steam Locomotives.

The Union Pacific Historical Society has the full set (less a couple of drawings) of Big Boy drawings on CD. But the CD is currently listed as being out of stock. 4014 being in the news is probably the cause of that.

While still very impressive, he cut a lot of corners when he 3D modeled the locomotive. It's designed to be 3D printed. The files wouldn't be useful for a live steamer or historical reference.

I have about 40 hours into a "full size" 3D model of a Southern Pacific MT4/MT5 cast steel frame and guess I still have another 80 hours to go to get it "just right", with the intent being to have it 3D printed in 1" scale for display at the California State RR Museum.

Like I said his dedication and actually making the 3D print himself is very impressive.

Cheers,

Curtis F.

But not exactly cutting corners on the Big Boy's printed parts, which are very course in surface texture. That was caused by the limitations of using a low resolution/lower quality printer such as a Makerbot.

Yep he's using a spaghetti printer. he should kickstart a campaign to pay for a proper model from Shapeways or similar vendor.
