This is the casting that holds up the smoke box.

The steam box is 8 inches x 8 inches. Please forgive me if am not calling something by its correct name.

These metal bars are 23" x 1" x 1/2 inch. This is only a guess. Connecting arms for the wheels?

A cast iron smoke box? . . . that's the first one of those I've seen.

The smoke box is not cast iron.

No issues. 309 welding rod assuming a 304 or 316 stainless to mild steel. From looking at those pictures it may be stainless and it may not, I wouldn't draw a definite conclusion just from them.Kimball McGinley wrote:I have some reservations about the steam dome - it appears to be stainless steel, I think? I am not sure how well SS and mild steel take to arc welding together? The SS cap is fine, I am talking about the major portion.
Comments anyone?
*EDIT* I just went back and checked for what to use to join 316 and mild steel and a couple sources I found said that the 309 rod is not appropriate for such work, although I think I remember using it when I was working in a spooling shop joining 316 fittings to mild steel pipe but I can't remember now for sure. I found another source tonight saying that the 309 is fine for 316 to mild as long as the service application is not severe, which this wouldn't be.

Here is a photo of the 999 built by Fred Bohn in Niagara Falls NY. It's 7 1/4" gauge and is coal fired. A few years back she received a full cosmetic restoration.

After viewing the photos, these castings did come from Fred's patterns,my Father purchased the patterns from the estate after Fred passed,he had 3 sets of castings made, one set went Texas, one set went to the Chicago area,Fred original 999 first ran at the PVLS track Springfield Mass back in the 60's
She ran like a rabbit when lightly loaded with two flat cars,& a bobber.

This is very interesting. So if I get this correct this is on of three 999 locomotives. That could be made from these castings.
My next questing is this the boiler for the 999. By the dimensions.
The circle area. Is where a water line goes into the 999 boiler.
The arrow area on my boiler has round cap. And it appears on the Fred's 999 has the same round cap. And he has bolted a bell to it.

I saw that too, joneg wrote:any idea why there is a weld bead around the upper half of the barrel a few inches in front of the firebox?
Wonder what the reason is for that... Perhaps a defect in the original piece of material that was welded over?

I'm dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to live steamers. Give my your great grand fathers 1850's pocket watch and I can get it up and running no problem.
So to answer the question I have know idea.
