wacky idea: connect mouse to cnc router for calibration?

Post by dorin »

For $9.99 I can get high precision optical gaming mouse.
It is USB wired...but has a DPI of 5500.
Mounted in place of the tool, I should be able to accurately measure x and y movement.
(I would only be a matter of software..theoretically)

I was trying to think of an easy way to attach the mouse.

So far, I was thinking...get a hunk of plastic...say, 2" tall.
drill a 1/4 hold 1 3/4" or so. Plunk a little spring in the bottom.
Superglue that to the top of the mouse.

Rase the tool, chuck a 1/4" strait router bit or drill bit into it, slide it in until it compresses the spring.

What do you think?
Worth a try?

You'd need an appropriate reference surface to ensure the optical image tracking chip didn't "lose" any of your movement but you should give it a go.
On the other hand if you're moving several hundred mm then you should be able to eyeball it to a gnat's with a rule & a pointy stick ;-)
