Have G-code. Can someone run these?

Post by Adirondack »

Hey folks. My old shop closed down but was kind enough to send me the G-code for my parts. These are the wheels and axles for my 3 1/2" gauge Maine style trucks.

Would anyone be willing to run some parts for me from these files?

Thanks

A little locomotive with 4 wheels on the track is a lot more fun
than a 1/2 finished one with 16 wheels on the bench!

You might post what machine controller was being used to make your parts, and a sample of the code, as code generated for one controller does not mean that it is compatable with other controllers.

You would also have to know what cutters were being used for the different operations.

The best would be to just start fresh with the CAD drawings and let someone code it to match their controller and tooling.

Operating machines is perfectly safe......until you forget how dangerous it really is!

AMAZINGLY, the G-code includes all of the tooling notes. See below

(DRAWING NO: 3PT5 WHEEL)
(OP: 3PT5 WHEEL.2)
(POST REVISED BY NMCC - 12/26/2014)
(MAKE COMPATIBLE W/INLIST)
(HAAS ST-10)
(TOOLING LIST)
(TOOL #3 .1574 EXTERNAL GROOVE TOOL WHEEL)
(TOOL #7 1/2 HSS SPOT DRILL)
(TOOL #9 LTR W HSS JOBBER LENGTH WHEEL)
(TOOL #1 35 DEG GENERAL TURN .015 TNR WHEEL)
(TOOL #11 .008 TNR BORING BAR .285 MIN BORE WHEEL)

Does that help?

That will be very helpful.

So will the fact that it was created for a Haas.

Mild steel. Nothing too greedy, enough for 3-6 cars for now. More if you're willing!

you will get a much better price if you want larger quantities..not just from me but from anyone that has to set up the lathe...setup will take longer than production if you only want 24 wheels.

Are you volunteering Bill? LOL

I can do larger quantities if that's what it takes.

ACTUALLY I am not...but being in a position where I support people who run machines for a living and do estimates, I know exactly how they will think...and time is $$$ and setup is time. I have a few customers that I can contact to see if they are interested, but I need a DRAWING, not code.

From a manufacturing standpoint, I would look at how many parts you can get from one standard bar (what diameter ARE the wheels?) and order at LEAST one BAR length...or two.

or are these from castings????

The second reality check is that unless the machine owner has the EXACT TOOLS in the CODE, he may / may not choose to even USE your code which is TOOL SPECIFIC.

Many owners will use the tools they have to make the part -> so in REALITY it is better to just 'shop out a drawing', not CODE.

"I need 100 of these wheels made from xxxxx material. Give me a price".

This way, you don't care what tools they use...you want a part....and if they do it with hammer / chisel and grinder, meet the spec and come in at lowest cost...you really don't care.

NEVER got a message...

I have someone who might be interested but your drawing needs a lot of work before you can get meaningful quote.
