I interviewed in a shop a long time ago and the old German die maker asked me to show him a Dutch Planer. I handed him a file. I got the job.

No one wants to use a dutch planer these days.
All wana push the green button on the CNC.

Pack man makes cnc man.

Experienced hand was judged by how many fingers
he was missing back in the day.

That was before my time!

When I went to trade school in 1963, the first project after learning to sharpen a drill was to make a PAIR of parallel clamps. And if anything was off, we got to start all over again.

Ya gotta admit, the old heads made great parts, but they had attitudes. One day, the Chinese swept in with horrible parts but good attitudes and cheap labor and took all the jobs.

Naw, it's CNC now, or "you want fries with that?"

But they died on the job doing it!

Ain't that easy, Ask the beginners on this and other boards

To make a good CNC machinist it takes good machining skills,
and good programming skills. That's a lot of time and training
invested by machinist, and employer.

Employers don't want to do it,
Cause you'll likely go up the road for a $.25 raise.

CNC operators (button pushers), now that's a different story.
