CAD programs for a Mac?

Post by JohnHudak »

Does anyone know of a good, reasonable priced CAD program that will run on a MAC computer?
Thanks; John

if you have a newer MAC and use something like CROSSOVER to run Windows, the world is your oyster.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Yeah, I had a friend suggest that to me, I'm still thinking about it.. I'll need to buy some sort of Windows operating system right? I'm wondering what the cost difference would be.... Windows OS vs MAC based CAD system..

Hi John,

If 2D will work for you, Draftsight is absolutely free and works on Macs as well as Linux & Windows systems. It's scary close to Autocad and very powerful. Many tutorials & YouTube videos are available on the web and there's a very large user base. Same folks that do Solidworks but that ain't cheap!

Good luck!

I have turbocad for mac ... I have the 2D/3D version.

I am not that proficient with it, but it seems to be a very complete solution. The version I have is the "Deluxe", not the "Pro". When I originally purchased it, it cost ~ $99.

If TURBOCAD has a MAC version, and it works, then for the $, that is a good solution.

They have been around a long time.

Install bootcamp, make your mac dual boot, install Win7, run any of the decent cad programs in Win7. Your mac is really a PC, might as well install the native operating system to run the decent cad packages.

I cannot recommend Moi3D enough. It is a pro level program with amazing accuracy and an easy to learn interface. It also only costs $299. It was written by the fellow who originally wrote RhinoCAD, a professional piece of software. The user forum is the best I have ever seen, as your questions are usually answered by the creator of the program. Can't ask for better than that!

than a 1/2 finished one with 16 wheels on the bench!

There are 3d programs, and there are 3d cad programs. Whats the difference?
One is designed to make 3d characters for video's, the other is designed to design machinery.
If tolerances, dimensions, and units of measure are not front and foremost accessible in the program, I would steer clear of it for anything in this hobby.

There used to be a program called Velum, but I think it was around $2,500.00 6 or 7 years ago.
You can buy good parts, or you can buy cheap parts, but you can't buy good cheap parts.
